This staging, based on Strindberg’s mystical drama as transcribed by Sebastian Majewski, inaugurated the season devoted to Konrad Swinarski’s life and work. “The stage of the Stary Theater is surrounded by a construction of skulls. There are thousands of them. The walls seem to be built of skulls – the balconies, bay windows, everything. The white of the bones is oppressive. Klata and Majewski have read The Road to Damascus through pop culture,” writes Olga Katafiasz on teatralny.pl. “The allusions to music and film create a thick web of references, building a store of materials for following scenes. As always with such a densely woven fabric of connections, not all of them are perceptible; some remain the viewer’s impression, and are not necessarily projected by the artists.” This play about a contemporary quest for the absolute seduces the viewer with its audio/visual side; yet in accompanying Idol on his journey, we feel as lost as him. In a world where death is stripped of its existential dimension, and betrayal or morality are subjects for the tabloids, the aim of the journey ceases to be so clear.
