The Queer Ball Returns to the Stary Theatre!
Last year’s edition was such a success that it even won an award.
The Queer Ball at the National Stary Theatre received an award at the LGBT+ Diamonds Awards in the category Local Initiative of the Year. And honestly? It’s no surprise. Shared dances, sequins, emotions, and an unforgettable atmosphere — you can’t fake that, but we can definitely do it again!
✦
The second edition of the Ball, organized with the support of the MICET education department as part of the Queerowy Maj festival, returns this Saturday, May 30.
✦
The Queer Ball is an event celebrating diversity, freedom of self-expression, and community building. “Queer” is a term used by parts of the LGBTQ+ community — people of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations. Once used as an insult, the word has been reclaimed over time and, for many, has become a symbol of pride, visibility, and the right to be oneself. For us, “queer” also means openness to different experiences, identities, and ways of being. We are creating a space for meeting, celebration, and togetherness grounded in respect, safety, and the joy of being together.
✦
With this year’s Ball, we also wish to reach back into history — to the 1920s and 1930s — and pay tribute to those without whom Poland’s struggle for freedom and equality before the law would not have looked the same: the Polish suffragettes.
✦
They set an example that future generations continue to follow today, inspired by the words “We shall not abandon our land” and by the belief that Kraków and Poland are home to all citizens, without exception. Especially considering that as early as 1932, Poland decriminalized homosexual relationships — something much of Europe envied at the time.
✦
The Queer Ball is open to everyone who wishes to help create a space based on respect and openness.
