Requiem for a Dream
Dir. Jakub Skrzywanek
ul. Starowiślna 21
All of us are taking something.
We’re lonely creatures who, for most of our lives, suffer from being
misunderstood,
anxious,
excluded.
We can seek a sense of closeness and relationships, which ultimately show us how extremely unhappy we are. We can delude ourselves that courage, anger or a struggle help us break out of it.
The sad truth is that the only thing that can truly save us is
work,
sex,
drugs,
our beautiful perfect bodies and
delight in what we are.
This stage adaptation of one of the most famous novels of the twentieth century, by Hubert Selby Jr., filmed by Darren Aronofsky, is a brutal tale of contemporary life, the constant pursuit of pleasure, of shifting borders and the inhuman rush to chase after fantasies. It is, finally, a tale of the body, which needs stimulation, and if all this is not enough, it has to pay the price. It is a dopamine-driven requiem for our dreams.
What a beautiful, thrilling vision, to be finally for myself alone. To fall asleep and never awake.
