This play is about the masses, whose anxieties in the near future will attract a dictator promising a new utopia – and about anxieties for the future, in which the hungry masses select a new dictator – and about a dictator who can best explain the future of democracy to the anxiety-ridden masses. The director has created a vision of the world in collapse, in which the value vacuum is being exploited by such people as the tyrant Gyubal Wahazar and his opponent Father Unguenty, who offers the disoriented masses a marvelous plan for organizing society. “Humankind’s quick-fix happiness kills the difficult joys of exceptional individuals,” wrote Witkacy, foretelling the end of civilization. “Świątek has a perfect grasp of the avant-garde peculiarities of Witkacy’s text, a timeless fairy-tale about the fear of losing power. He has created a world on stage whose paradoxical laws are set by ‘absolute nonsense’ and grotesque Catastrophism. This Futuristic vision of a society ruled by a cruel tyrant amuses and terrifies us all at once. It also turns out to be astonishingly timely, notes Marta Anna Zabłocka in Gazeta Wyborcza.
